Dental fillings are used to repair teeth when they are damaged by decay. Tooth fillings help bring a tooth back to its normal function and shape. In addition to restoring teeth, dental fillings also help prevent any further decay by closing off spaces where bacteria can enter.
Traditionally, teeth were repaired with silver/mercury fillings which, although functional, have a tendency to discolor the tooth and cause fractures if left in for too long. At City Smiles, we exclusively use mercury-free tooth colored filling material known as composite resin to provide durability and to provide patients with natural looking smiles.
If you are embarrassed about your smile because of decay or dark fillings in your teeth, you may be a good candidate for composite resins. Because composite resins are not made of metal, we can blend and mix shades to find the perfect color to match your natural teeth. This means only you and Dr. Hill will know you having fillings. Best of all, composite resins allow us to keep more of your natural tooth structure intact than amalgams. We believe in conservative dentistry – the more natural tooth structure you keep, the better teeth you will likely have in the future.
If the decay in a tooth is too severe to fix by a dental filling, Dr. Hill may suggest an additional or alternative treatment. This may be necessary when too much enamel loss makes the tooth sensitive. Often the dental filling can remedy this issue or significantly improve it, but in some cases we may recommend one of the following:
Our natural looking composite resins will have your teeth looking and feeling great. To learn more about this treatment or to see if you are a candidate for tooth-colored dental fillings please contact our St Louis dentist office today.
